Recipe Description

This vibrant sweet and sour chicken is a perfect balance of tangy, savory, and fruity flavors. Tender sliced chicken breasts are sautéed with sweet onions, green bell pepper, and fresh pineapple, then coated in Panda Express sweet & sour sauce.

Directions:

  1. Slice chicken breasts into thin 1/4" slices and season with salt.
  2. Dice onion & slice green pepper (I cut the green peppers into small .5" by 1" slices)
  3. Cut pineapple chunks into small slices (I usually make them 1" by 1/2" by 1/4")
  4. Add onion, green pepper, & carrots to a deep Sautee pan and add sesame seed oil. Cook on medium heat until the onions begin to turn translucent.
  5. Add chicken to the pan with the onion/green pepper/carrots mixture and cook until done.
  6. Add 2/3 of a bottle of sweet and sour sauce, sugar, & pineapple to the pan, simmer until the sauce begins to thicken. (If your sauce is not thick enough add 1 Tbsp corn starch to the mix)
  7. Serve over rice & enjoy!

Recipe History

Sweet and sour chicken is a popular dish with roots in Chinese cuisine, adapted over time to suit Western tastes. The original concept of combining sugar and vinegar in sauces dates back centuries in Chinese cooking, particularly in Cantonese cuisine. As the dish gained popularity in the West, it evolved to include breaded or stir-fried chicken, bell peppers, and pineapple, creating the iconic version known today. The use of bottled sauces like Panda Express’s sweet & sour blend makes it even more accessible for home cooks seeking bold flavor with minimal prep.
